Rainy day!
So rare.

Even after all this time
the sun never says to the earth,

"You owe Me."

-Hafiz, translated by Daniel Ladinksy

Drawing - pen, 2.5 x 3.5 inches.
I closed my eyes while drawing the lines for this...just to see what would happen.
(And eyes were open for contouring the lines.)

  1. jenny stevning - rain! lucky lucky you! it's minus nineteen here right now. very sunny. the snow and ice are shades of pale blue and vanilla yellow. the sound, the smell, the feel of rain - well they are well inside the essence of what i love. i love this poem by hafiz. have a peaceful evening. steven

  2. The anthology of Hafez have translated also in Japan. I came to want to read his poetry because I had read your quotation.

  3. Hi, Steven! Sadly, the rain stopped about an hour later. I thought it was going to last. But, it was VERY beautiful after the clouds cleared out. Very chilly - 58 degrees. I am sure that makes you laugh, but for Southern California that is cold!

Tsutomu - I am happy you like the poem! Enjoy!

  4. Hi Jenny. I've been reading and enjoying all your posts, but don't always find the time or words to comment.

This one especially touches me. Along with Dan's most recent post, this connects with where I am right now. Becoming very aware of and learning to let go of "You owe me" or any other judgment that bars me from fully loving and celebrating.

Thank you for this - I will continue to treasure it and ponder it.

By the way, I just love the childlike simplicity and delight that shine through in your art and words.

    Merry Christmas!

  5. Thank you, Pollinatrix! That warms my heart!!
    From my grateful heart...Merry Christmas!
